Community Spotlight: Margot Spence

Margot was a founding member of Emmaus community and the AbbeyChurch.  In earlier years she was part of the Abbey Vision team and is now a recent addition to the Abbey Council.  She loves the creativity and participation of so many different people in our worship, the liturgical seasons we celebrate, and our willingness to try things like the recent house church experiment. 

Margot came to faith in her last year at high school, through friends in a united church youth group.  She was hugely involved with Intervarsity Christian Fellowship through 7 years of university, and especially enjoyed the fun of being part of the IVCF International friendship group.  She completed one year at the London School of Theology, and worked in Nepal with Interserve for 6 months to explore becoming a missionary.  Realizing that was not her calling, she was then involved in various ministries at a local evangelical church and a local Anglican Church, before joining Emmaus Community and The Abbey.  Her faith journey was also shaped by a decade of depression and two rounds with gastrointestinal cancer and (successful!) surgeries.

As well as helping with the North Park Neighbourhood Hamper program, (and cameras at the Abbey), Margot loves to play pickleball, do essentrics for exercise, and often takes art and craft classes for creative inspiration (her latest being zentangle)!  She also loves retreats and pilgrimages, thrifting, visiting friends around the world and learning random new things (like how to use a Library thing :).  Oh, and she loves books.

In the past, Margot was passionate about women in church leadership, stewardship of the environment, the wellbeing of the third world poor, and justice and reconciliation for BC First Nations.  She has become more contemplative in later years, feeling resonance with Jesus’s call to watch and pray (when things seem dire for his disciples)!  She is also passionate about everyone being welcomed and loved by God :)
