Dale Roberts was born in 1962 and lived for 17 years in the remote &\; tiny northern community of Point Leamington\, Newfoundland. Dale’s story is one of transformation\, creation and manifestation whic h began at a very young age when he learned to crochet from his mother. Up on leaving the Rock in 1992 to further his studies after graduation with a BFA (1992) from Sir Wilfred Grenfell College\; Dale received his MFA (199 5) from State University of New York\, Purchase College\, New York. Dale m oved to Victoria in 1999.\nA fibre artist\, sculptor\, international Mail Art creator and devotee\, and a much loved performance artist all speak to the many ways his work parallels his own transformative journey. Dale’s exhibition Dames\, Divas &\; Icons is comprised of portraits and bus ts that highlight his extraordinary interpretation of famous and much ador ed public personalities that he has manifested through painting and sculpt ing with felt. The depth of colour\, tonality and personalities captured i n each portrait sing with intimate tenderness and mirthful joy. They are a celebration of these individuals living contributions to others through t heir public personas and art forms. The Artist’s own transcendent journe y speaks to his fascination and admiration of these Dames &\; Divas and their own transformative journeys.\nThe Chapel Gallery at St. Matthias Ch urch celebrate the Advent season with the Dames\, Divas and Icons Exhibiti on which so uniquely demonstrates the changing from the Dark to the Light\ ; the transformation and acceptance of each of us as unique and unlimited souls who flourish within the creative and public realms. The personalitie s Dale has chosen to represent have each broken barriers\, exposed themsel ves and challenged societal norms in the process of developing their icon statuses. Dale’s interpretation of these individuals has been built on r esearch\, correspondence\, and relationships he has forged over the decade s to realize aspects of their journeys.\nArtist Dale Roberts has much to c elebrate as he has interpreted and manifested his creation of Dames\, Div as &\; Icons. His craftsmanship and exquisite detail with these interpr etations is not to be missed.
